ಸಿಕ್ಕಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ತೃಪ್ತಿ ಯಾರೂ ಹೊಂದುವುದಿಲ್ಲ;

Mt.Takao Nature Trail

It was calm and sunny Saturday Morning. My decision to cycle to a new place was dropped because of my bad nature of coming up with ingenious ideas to stay in the bed. I usually satisfy myself somehow to stay more time in the bed. That’s one side of the story. The other side of the story is that this sleeping long hours is alternated with, me sleeping bare minimum, making up on the edge. In this bare minimum cycle I make up with just 4 hours of sleep. During that time I am more productive and innovative too. I need to keep challenging myself to achieve that. But with out knowing I slip out of that and back again on the long , unfruitful sleeping habit , completing the cycle. It keeps alternating.

On 16th of June, it was nearly 9:45 that I got up. Since it was weekend, I was gearing up for my weekend Japanese class. I usually rate myself not very good at learning new language. I believe polyglots are basically bunch of people who are exposed to more than one language at an early stage of development. May be before one’s 5th birthday. Their mind set is just set to take up any new language. For me it takes a longer time to get a mastery over the language. When I really start out with a new language it will be for the perfection. Right now I am trying to make a perfect entry in to Japanese language. I should be able to read their book in their own language. The beauty lies there. OK .. enough of my monotonous talks. Coming back to the story , I was waiting for an excuse to skip this Japanese class as I feel , I am not spending quality time on this beautiful language.

My Mobile starts ringing at 10:45 and Sai calls up asks whether I can make it for a hiking. My immediate reaction was a joyous ‘Yes’. Then I ask him ‘Where?’ He promptly apologies that he cannot repeat that place name and promptly gives the number of Gokul. I immediately place a call to him.

Me: ‘Hey Gokul ‘ , how are you man ?
Goku: Fine da ( soliloquy : what this da stands for, I am scratching my head ! )
Me: Gokul, what are the plans for the day ?
Gokul: Its Takaosanguchi and from there it’s ascent to Mt.Takao.
Me: Oh, gr8 … I am in. Who else is joining us ?
Gokul: Only Joseph and sai da ….

I just wind up my talks & tell him that I will be joining them at Shinjuku station. Its then a mad rush to seiyu supermarket to grab some quick, dry snacks. Food has never been a problem for me during the treks. Even water too. I just go on and on. My stamina comes from repeated physical exertion for a prolonged period. It’s purely backed up by my will. Will to put the next step forward , when your whole body is saying ‘no’. Its separating the two entities and our mind should be in saying position and body in a responding position. This has helped me in my many previous strenuous treks. Once I remember , I came from Hyderabad and reached sirsi at 5:00 in the morning and and at 7:00 Am went for a trek to Mattigatta. I, Trekked till the evening with a fistful of Avalakki as energizer.

I reached Shinjuku station at 1300 hrs along with sai. Gokul and Joseph joined in a matter of few minutes. We then boarded the train to Takaosanguchi on Odakyu line. The journey was comfortably 45 minutes and compartment was almost empty except for beginning of the journey. As we approached our destination, the place around was turning from a concrete jungle to a real jungle. It was real eye softener. On our compartment we could see only few people , but all with a back pack. Obviously for the same destination. Some of us developed a familiar common bonding and exchanged smiles. At takaosanguchi station we purchased some food items and water. The automatic vending machines are part of life here. They find their way in to the mountain top too. With the printout from the ‘ Day walk near Tokyo ‘ , we maneuvered our way by the side of Nature Museum. There is a path leading to Cable car pickup point. Just before the start of that road we took the steps that was the start of our trail. This mountain is officially in Tokyo itself. This is the one of the closest getaway from the maddening crowd.

The uphill we took had steps in the beginning. Since the foliage was thick and canopy of trees covering us above, the afternoon sun was almost blocked and it was blissfully cool. It was photo rampage from all of us. We met many trekkers who were ascending from their completed circuit hiking. We even exchanged some smiles and Japanese ‘ Konnichiwa ! ‘ . As usual we met people fully geared looking like models and picture perfect. We could hear familiar bell sounds. It reminded me of returning cows from the day grazing ! On our way up we stopped at the temple of mountain deity. The guardian of the Mt.Takao. These people are nature worshippers like us. In some places the tall coniferous kind of trees were logged to make the hiking trail. Here everything is so orderly that I find it really boring sometimes. In forest , the joy of finding ones own way is really interesting and challenging too. I loved the uncertainty in the trekking. I have taken so much risks like there is no tomorrow during my ‘ Phase one’ of life. Mad rush of adrenaline was really the way of my life. It was all the outcome of my previous traumatic adolescent years.

After hiking for around 45 minutes we reached the first vantage point on the mountain. Here there is a one more trail that circles the mountain top. Every now and then we crossed well marked sign boards written in Japanese on the Wooden planks giving the trail directions. From this vantage point we could see the boundary of greenery stretched far below beyond which we could see the high rise and concrete jungle. There is that well marked boundary, one could make out. After a brief snack session, we again started our climbing. As we climbed higher we started seeing the other mountain range stretching and making a dark outline on the horizon.

When we reached the top , it was really nice late evening sun with cool breeze from the valley below that welcomed us. On the top there is a metallic signboard indicating the height of each mountain that can be viewed from the top. There in the back stood the revered Mt.Fuji or Fuji san. It’s a beautiful almost perfect conical dormant volcano. I could take one beautiful snap of Fuji san. The mountain top is around 599 mts above sea level. There are automatic vending machines here too , housing cold drinks and hot beverages. There on the top we met a Japanese couple who had spent around 3 months in India , exploring and tasting the varied cultures of India. They were very excited talking about India and the lady was well informed about India. Even asked about film career of Ash Rai ! . We took a snap along with the Japanese couple. It was warm waving and bowing before we took off for a descent.

We took the route 4 of the hiking trail which winds down crossing a hanging bridge and Monkey Zoo. On our way down we tried to visit the Ja water falls. But due to the shortage of time we had to drop the idea after descending about good half a kilo meter. The cable car drop of point was near by . From that point , it was a silent descent till we reached the railway station. It was almost past 7:30 in the evening that we reached the station. It was 7:55 PM train that we caught , on our way back to Shinjuku. From Shinjuku to Our Den which is 1 hour journey it was silent contemplative journey.

Tanzawa National Park

General Outline :

For some people, "hiking" implies not taking a taxi from the front door to the train station. For others, it conjures images of fresh air, mountaintop vistas, and endless tree-filled horizons. Those in the latter category will appreciate that nature in all its glory - a treasury of oxygen, foliage, and spring water - beckons within an easy day trip of the choking city.
Verdant foothills and low mountains (mostly below 2000m) gird the Kanto plain to the south and west. Networks of trails follow the valleys and ridge lines, offering gradients ranging from rolling riversides to vertical rock climbs. With everything from torturous uphill routes for die-hards to cable-car assisted ascents from which to mock and pity them, there's something for everyone.
Unfortunately, everyone knows there is something for them: Hiking is very popular in Japan. On weekends, holidays, in the mornings and in areas closest to the city, expect crowded trails. On top of most mountains, expect a cold drink machine, a noodle shop, and groups of people sharing this special moment with a keitai and a pack of cigarettes.
While at times the terrain might resemble mountain trails in other parts of the world, hikers in Japan have their own idiosyncrasies. Since Bassho's day, many Japanese have taken up the sport as a panacea for woes of urban living - although, don't be surprised to see women wearing heels or sandals at Takao-san ( This one was visited on our previous outing ). On the trails, you will certainly meet caravans of mostly older Japanese (a prescription for health, they'll tell you) clad head to toe in matching Gore-Tex outfits, wool knickers, argyle socks, gaiters, heavy boots, and a towel around their neck. People often hike to the tinkling of bells or the strains of enka (folk music) from small transistor radios attached to their packs, and nearly all are friendly - but, as you utter your 20th "konnichi wa" in a row during a steep breathless ascent, you may begin to wish they weren't.
The best seasons for hiking in Kanto are spring (March to May) and autumn (October to December). It's not too hot, humid, or cold, there's little rain or mud, and the promise of bright green buds, blooming yama-zakura (mountain cherry trees), and purple azalea in spring and the fiery reds and oranges of koyo (foilage) in autumn is positively Pavlovian.
In the summer, humidity is high, there's rain and mud, but lush green forests and waterfalls keep you shaded and rested. Winter days are short and can be cold, but they reward hardier folks with fewer crowds, blue skies, clear views, and low humidity. Some of the higher peaks may also get frost, ice and/or snow.
Tanzawa and Oku-tama offer greater variety and longer, even multi-day treks.
This is one of favorite places in the extreme west end of Tokyo, known as Okutama. In fact, it is hard to believe that as you are standing in this mountainous area, you are still officially in tokyo. It is a great day trip and getaway because in one-and-a-half hours you can get away from the messy urban sprawl of tokyo city, and be amongst nature.

Sunday- 24.06.07

My Day started at 0500hrs, JST. Had a quick wash , a slice of bread and started calling others, asking them to get ready. As uaual I was ready on time by 0535 hrs waiting for others to get ready. Everyone ie. highbridge gang and myself , joined at Gyotoku station at 0600hrs.

From Gyotoku - Tozailine ( 0610 hrs ) reached Kayabacho - Hibiya line and Tozai line junction at 0630 hrs. We had to wait for Sathish and Meena to join us who had missed the train we had boarded and at 0638hrs they joined us at Kayabacho. From Kayabacho to Ebisu it was a silent ride with Subhajit joining us at Tsukiji. From Ebisu we boarded the JR line to Shinjuku - The world's busiest station with an average 3.2 million people using this station everyday. It is so vast that there are 200 exits ! On weekdays its just human sea moving in unison. Grim, drowsy faced crowd moving systematically bound for final destination.

Here in Shinjuku station, we switched to Odakyu Line express from Platform 4-5 to Shin-Matsuda. Joseph and Gokul had started 40 mins early as per our earlier schedule and were 40 mins ahead of us.We took the train at 0731 hrs. It was comfortably, long journey of nearly 1 hour 20 min. We reached Shin-Matsuda at 0853 hrs. The train fare from Shinjuku to Shin-Matsuda is 750 ¥. After reaching this station and it was decided the trek we had planned which is nearly 8 hours long really strenuous for newbies and ultimately in the end I was left alone to take up that trail. So I decided to take it up when my better half joins me. I think I will be attempting that trail in the fall time, in October or November when the whole forest range will be glowing in color. The other trail we decided which is " Omote-Tanzawa forest trail" required us to retrace our journey by one station, ie.Shibusawa.

The train fare from Shin-Matsuda to Shibusawa is 180 ¥. From Shibusawa station we had to take the central exit, turn right, and walk a few meters to the bus stand, and catch a No. 2 Kanagawa Chuo Kotsu bus for Okura. Here some of us took a break as the bus was at 0945 hrs and few of us were feeling hungry. The bus journey was short one with small individual houses, curvy roads sided by beautiful garden. The fare is 200 ¥.

The weather was gloomy with rain clouds blocking the sun. The total envirnment was calm and cool, with mountain range covered with tall coniferous kind of trees.

There is a board welcoming the hikers to Omote-Tanzawa Park. We took the road leading to the forest, a uphill tar road path. After walking for some ten minutes it started drizzling and it continued throughout the journey. Another ten minutes of walk, we took the small lane leading to the forest, which narrowed to a trail and ultimately joined the cold, damp, moss clad tree lines. It looked like this area had the rains for the last fortnight as the total way was really wet, muddy and moreover the tall trees were covered with moss and lichens. The canopy made the total walk, a dark , haunting one. After covering around 800 mts we reached a narrow ill maintained tar roads. As per the looks on the forest walls it looked like the forest had a constant landslide, changing the view all together. We could see some nets which was put on the vertical face of the forest floor on the steep curving. With mud and sludge covering and grass growing on it, it had effectively blocked the soil erosion.

A walk of around 3.5kms brought us to a fork , with one way leading down to kokuryu Waterfall.Since I was piloting with subhajit , I had to go down for the look out and scouting. It looked more like a seasonal water fall to me than a natural splendid, awesome waterfall I had seen in Sahyadri Hill ranges. This falls joins with Shijuhasse River which literally means " River with 48 Rapids".

There is makeshift bridge of logs nailed and tied together to cross this river. The total area was grassy and moist with rains pouring and water dripping from the trees. This place is real damp with lot of big leeches. Since I was wearing my sandals, I was most affected with 4 leech bites and Now I can proudly say I have donated my blood in Tokyo blood donation camp! There are signs in Japanese cautioning the people about the area full of leeches.
We climbed again the path, which is really winding uphill and hard climbing. I had to climb this path 2 times because I was scouting the area. We again joined the main road and rain was picking up the strength. We met some Japanese hikers with fully geared from top to bottom with map of the camp. With insights from them we cut short our journey and took a shorter trail which directly connected us to the Shijuhasse River. The path was almost damp, slippery thin foot trail which brought us directly to the makeshift bridge. It was almost straight down with steep inclination. Everyone literally ran because of leeches ! After reaching the river we climbed the same uphill path by the side of Kokurya waterfall. Some were almost out of breath and about to collapse. After that the journey back was almost silent one split as 4 groups. Myself alone in the front and sai and sudheer making the second wave , Raj alone as the third wave . Rest all in a group nearly 10 minutes walk behind. The rain was really pouring heavily and we were drenched like old crows.
When We reached Okura, the starting point, it was 1600 hrs. We washed our selves at the common cleaning place, where one can clean their shoes too, to get ready for the urban appearance. Brush and flowing water is available for this, which of course is free or costs 0 ¥ !
Back home journey was really silent with most of the participants were sleeping and some even with their mouth open ! On the train Joseph pulled out the last of the leeches that had comfortably sucked enough blood from him. The leech had lost its home grounds and made a free ride till Machida , where we changed the train bound to shinjuku. It was around 2000 hrs that we reached our den.
Next week it may be Kamakura : The place known for Shrines, hiking trails and beach.

Sinner Sea goes , Kneeful water.

Open windows. let the air force come in.

On Saturday 21.04.07 , it was a sudden decision from Anil Polineni to visit the Sapporo Beer Museum. Its a Beer Museum which is unique and which can be reached by Ebisu station ( H-2) on Hibiya Line.

Yebisu's century-old tradition of brewing beer is now celebrated in a new museum dedicated to the history, science and culture of the beloved beverage. The museum will take visitors to experience new world of the beer through the "MAGIC VISION THEATER" and other video equipment that employ the latest technologies.

What is Love & Marriage ................?

To all of you who are married and all others who aren't....

One day, Plato asked his teacher, "What is love? How can I find it?" His teacher answered, "There is a vast wheat field in front. Walk forward without turning back, and pick only one stalk. If you find the most magnificent stalk, then you have found love." Plato walked forward, and before long, he returned with empty hands, having picked nothing.

His teacher asked, "Why did you not pick any stalk?" Plato answered, "Because I could only pick once, and yet I could not turn back. I did find the most magnificent stalk, but did not know if there were any better ones ahead, so I did not pick it. As I walked further, the stalks that I saw were not as good as the earlier one, so I did not pick any in the end. His teacher then said, "And that is love."

On another day, Plato asked his teacher, "What is marriage? How can I Find it?" His teacher answered, "There is a thriving forest in front. Walk forward without turning back, and chop down only one tree. If you find the tallest tree, then you have found marriage". Plato walked forward, and before long, he returned with a tree. The tree was not thriving, and it was not tall either. It was only an ordinary tree. His teacher asked, "Why did you chop down such an ordinary tree?" Plato answered, "Because of my previous experience. I had walked through the field, but returned with empty hands. This time, I saw this tree, and I felt that it was not bad, so I chopped it down and brought it back. I did not want to miss the opportunity."

His teacher then said, "And that is marriage. You see son Love is the most beautiful thing to happen to a person, its an opportunity but you don't realize its worth when you have it but only when its gone like the field of stalks. Marriage like the tree you chopped , it's a compromise."
Bystanders view:
So don't let your love go away from you.........................
otherwise u will have to compromise with the marriage..........

HER DIARY :

Day night, I thought he was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a cafe to have some coffee. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that Iwas a bit late, but he made no comment.Conversation wasn't flowing so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk, he agreed but he kept quiet and absent.IAsked him what was wrong - he said, "Nothing."I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said it had nothing to do with me and not to worry.
On the way home I told him that I loved him, he simply smiled and kept driving. I can't explain his behavior; I don't know why he didn't say, "I love u, too."When we got home I felt as if I had lost him, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there and watched TV. He seemed distant and absent. Finally I decided to go to bed. About 10 minutes later he came to bed.
I decided that I could not take it anymore, so I decided to confront him with the situation but he had fallen asleep.I started crying and cried until I too fell asleep. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster.

HIS DIARY :
Today India lost the cricket match against Pakistan. DAAM IT.
Notes:
NOW that's called Simplicity of Men Vs Complexity of Women !!!

Story Time

Ever heard the story of the giant ship engine that failed? The ship's owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure but how to fix the engine. Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was a youngster. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom.

Two of the ship's owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. He carefully put his hammer away. The engine was fixed! A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for ten thousand Rupees.

"What?!" the owners exclaimed. "He hardly did anything!" So they wrote the old man a note saying, "Please send us an itemized bill." The man sent a bill that read:

Tapping with a hammer ......................... Rs. 2.00
Knowing where to tap ............................. Rs. 9998.00

Effort is important, but knowing where to make an effort in your life makes all the difference

Colors..

Colors.

Its Enchanting. Mesmerising at times . Absolutely fantastic when presented live . Vivid when viewed with child's curiosity. Captivating when spring blooms. Absolutely , there is flow of life in color.
Dumbstruck at the altar of an artist. Framed on the celluloid of photographer. Magnifying the beauty that is already present. Blissfully displaying on petals of flowers.
Colors.
Its life that is dream. By living a dream you awake to the fluid flow of blend of colors.
Thanx for the color else , else life would have been monotonous.
